Sadler Energy can assess your development plans to check for Lifetime Homes Compliant and offer suggestions and advice at design stage. Lifetime homes make up part of the Code for Sustainable Homes category HEA4, and although are not necessarily required, 4 credits are awarded for compliant Plans. Where the development has a Code Level 6 requirement the Lifetime Homes compliance becomes mandatory. There are some exemptions in relation to criteria 2 and 3.

Ensuring that your development meets the Lifetime Homes requirements offers particular benefits to older people and people with physical impairments, whether they actually live in the property or want to visit relatives and friends without difficulty and enable the elderly to remain in their home for longer and to enable the disabled to achieve independent living.

We will work closely with you and your architect at design stage to ensure that the development complies with the 16 set design criteria (see below) that provide the model for building accessible and adaptable homes.

  1. Car parking width
  2. Moving from the parking space to the home
  3. Approach to the home
  4. Entrances
  5. Communal stairs and lifts
  6. Doorways & hallways
  7. Space to turn and move around
  8. Living room
  9. Convenient bed-space
  10. Accessible WC and potential shower
  11. Bathroom walls
  12. Getting upstairs - possibility for stair lift and future through floor lift
  13. Getting between bedroom and bathroom - potential hoist
  14. Bathroom layout
  15. Windows
  16. Sockets and controls

The Lifetime Homes design criteria make up the technical standard seeking to enable all housing to be convenient for a wide range of people, and also introduce some adaptability into the housing layout and design, so that simple adaptations can be carried out so that the house can re-adapt to suit any changing needs of the household. Architects, planners, developers and housebuilders will use this technical design criteria to design Lifetime Homes.
